CHARGES FILED IN CONNECTION WITH ASSAULT ON UK FOOTBALL PLAYER

Oldham County Police have charged two people with assault in connection with a fight that sent two men to the hospital on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at approximately 4:00 AM.

Michael Haire, 21, of Simpsonville, has been charged with Assault First Degree for allegedly striking UK Football player Tyler Bo Smith in the head with a baseball bat.  Smith was taken to the UK Medical Center in Lexington for treatment of his injuries.

Ryan Schumm, 19, of Crestwood, and also a UK Football player, has been charged with Assault First Degree for allegedly striking Tyy Owens in the head with his hands and feet.  Owens was taken to Baptist East Hospital in Louisville for treatment of his injuries, which included a possible broken jaw.

Assault First Degree is a Class B Felony that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

The cause of the fight is still under investigation.  More charges are possible.
